When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005 the team at Tom Nebel Productions was there for the aftermath.
Tom came to Biloxi with the Atlanta Fire Department to cover the story of Atlanta helping Biloxi in the wake of the storm. We produced a short documentary we entitled “Heroes Helping Heroes” that later we were honored to have played on the Jumbotron during at Atlanta Braves Conference playoff game.
Teaming up with City of Biloxi Public Affairs Manager Vincent Creel and the Mayor’s office was the first step. We both wanted to properly document Hurricane Katrina’s impact on Biloxi and also turn the project into a fund raiser for relief efforts managed by the city.
The project includes hundreds of photos, actual storm footage from Biloxi residents, and dozens of interviews from the residents who braved Katrina – the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. To date the video and a companion book available for sale at City Hall and on the city website have raised over $310,000.
